Leonardo: The Madonna with the Carnation

The "Madonna with the Carnation" is an impressive example of the early work of Leonardo da Vinci and the only one by the artist in Germany. It was painted in 1475 during the period when Leonardo - already an independent master - worked in the studio of his teacher Andrea del Verrocchio. Characteristic of the work is the confrontation with the approach of the older man Andrea del Verrocchio, whereby Leonardo was ultimately to find entirely different artistic solutions.

The extent to which this was a stimulus for other young artists working in Verrocchio's atelier can be seen from the paintings of Pietro Perugiono or Lorenzo di Credi. The exhibition illustrates for the first time the reciprocal nature of these relationships in the selected works on loan to the museum. The concentration achieved by showing them in this way helps the viewer to understand how Leonardo's work developed.

The highlight of the presentation in the Alte Pinakothek are four studies by the hand of Leonardo da Vinci based on the subject "Madonna with Child", which the artist varies with imaginative mastery.
