The Big Puzzle
Part of the famous Munich collection of vases was evacuated during the Second World War into the ground-floor rooms of the former Neue Pinakothek, which suffered extensive damage in 1944. One year later only, attempts were made to recover the vases from the ruins, but the majority had been smashed to pieces. Much was reassembled in the following decades; however, many fragments remained. In recent years, thousands of the fragments of this enormous puzzle have been identified, and the majority of the vases have been reconstructed as part of a large restoration program. The exhibition in the Staatliche Antikensammlungen presents the methods of identification and the restoration techniques.
