Giovanni Battista Tiepolo is visiting Munich: Restoration of the large ceiling fresco above the main staircase in the Würzburg Residence
The huge fresco by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo covering 677 m² of the ceiling above the staircase of the Würzburg Residence is one of the most important artworks in Southern Germany. It is a miracle that it survived the extensive damage sustained by the Residence during the Second World War. More than 50 years after the end of the war, the visible damage to the fresco necessitated extensive treatment. Salt efflorescence, dirt, cracks and peeling layers of paint in the secco regions spoiled its appearance to a considerable degree and thus required conservation as well as restoration. Three years of restoration work was successfully completed in March 2006. It was the largest restoration project of its kind to be undertaken to date by the Bavarian Palace Department. More than 30 conservators, scientists and experts worked together with employees from the municipal building authorities of Würzburg and the Bavarian Palace Department to make this project a success. The studio exhibition aims to inform visitors about the overall project and to provide insights into the individual conservation and restoration steps.
