Book bindings from 1000 years

The Bavarian State Library presents a selection of about 80 of its most outstanding book bindings from its rich and unique collection covering the Carolingian period to the present day. Sumptuous medieval covers are exhibited next to early modern ones commissioned by the nobility, everyday covers from monastic and public workshops as well as modern book bindings created by artists. Most of the exhibits are of Bavarian origin. The examples illustrate how the design of book covers in Bavaria profited from the intense exchange of developments with other regions of Germany and with neighbouring countries, such as France, The Netherlands, Great Britain and Italy. The exhibition will focus on decorative aspects as well as on bookbinding techniques.
