Baroque Wax Reliefs: Conserve and Discover

The Bavarian National Museum owns two, almost life-size, half-figured wax reliefs from the 18th century depicting “St. Joseph with Jesus as a Child” and “Maria with a Bowed Head”. The conservation and restoration work on the Joseph relief revealed conspicuous similarities, both technically and formally, to other such objects in Munich, Bavaria and Tyrol. The exhibition focuses on the production technique and polychromy of this relief and uses various methods of investigation to show whether or not the group has an identical origin. Further topics include the technique of wax embossing, the history of wax restoration in Germany and problems of conserving wax artworks.
