Sternfinder, Stromzähler, Schulgleiter. Conservation of Technical Treasures

Conservators of technical treasures deal with many different kinds of objects. They handle scientific instruments of the Renaissance, achievements of the industrial revolution e.g. bikes and planes, as well as simple commodities of daily life. All conceivable materials - from metals to glass, wood, and paper, as well as modern composites, PVC, and carbon fibre - become important for conservation and restoration treatments. It is equally important to discover the mode of operation. In order to recover the original purpose and functionality, it is very often necessary to replace missing parts or remove subsequent additions. In a few individual cases, it is considered to restore the functioning of an object. Selected exhibits will illustrate the wide range of tasks and requirements, as well as the methods of resolution and work used to restore technical treasures. The exhibition will illustrate the versatility of the staff working at the facilities belonging to the Deutsches Museum.
