Preserve Theatre History!

The aim of the German Theatre Museum is to collect and preserve theatre history, to exhibit it and to make it accessible to the public. Theatre history encompasses not only a performance in the Baroque Salvatortheater in Munich but also yesterday evening's performance. Documenting the theatrical world means dealing with a large range of materials: graphic sheets with stage and costume designs or portraits of the actors, hand-written objects, such as correspondence or directing and role scripts, photographs, sound storage media, video films, theatre leaflets and programmes, critics' reviews, books, architectural plans and models. The objectives of conservation work are accordingly complex; In order to preserve sensitive objects for the future, experts in paper, painting and photograph conservation are required. Because the German Theatre Museum does not has its own conservation department, it has to contract out the work to freelance conservators in accordance with its financial capabilities. The exhibition presents a small cross-section of the collection and its conservation and restoration needs as well as some examples of completed work. Historical stage design models represent a particular set of challenges; some examples from the 19th century are on display.
