Photographs by Gabriele Münter
Gabriele Münter first concerned herself with photography between 1898 and 1900 during a trip to America after she had been given one of the earliest models of the Kodak rolled film camera as a present. The photographs of this period show Münter's direct approach and are impressive historical documents of life in the American prairie at that time. In addition to this focal point, the exhibition in the Lenbachhaus includes photographs of journeys undertaken with Wassily Kandinsky and Münter’s well-known photographs as a chronicler of the "Blue Rider" until 1917. The photographs impressively document her clear abstractive view that often resulted in the images become the starting point of paintings and artworks on paper. On the basis of the photographs of the American trip, the exhibition develops aspects that deal with the historical and technical prerequisites for photography around 1900. The technical state of development and the photographic methods used by Gabriele Münter are described and visualised by means of examples and in terms of the art-technological and conservation possibilities.
