Model of the Munich Central Railway Station in Munich from 1942: Part of the National-Socialistic Planning Scheme for Munich
During development planning for the City of Munich to the "Capital of the Movement", a new plan was decided upon for the central railway station in 1934. It was to be a monumental domed building with centralised railway tracks. The station was to be part of the "major axis" through the city. The architect Herman Giesler was commissioned with the planning in 1938. Plans and photographs document numerous models of the construction of the station that were made in Giesler's office. However, only one of these models is still in existence and is now found in the Münchner Stadtmuseum. Owing to its poor state of preservation, this model was not accessible to researchers. Restoration and conservation measures attempt to preserve all the existing parts of the models, to determine the original positions of the individual elements and to fix them in the model. The manufacturing techniques and materials are investigated and documented during this work. The problems involved in the reconstruction process are discussed.
