Ten Tons Hellas: Carl Rottmann's Cycle of Greek Landscapes

The cycle of 23 Greek landscapes painted by Carl Rottmann between 1838 and 1850 was commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria and was originally one of the major works of the Neue Pinakothek. With the destruction of the building in the Second World War, the cycle lost its spatial integration within the museum.

To celebrate the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Neue Pinakothek three years ago, a new gallery was created for the majority of the paintings. This was made possible with the support of the Ernst von Siemens Art Foundation.

The special exhibition "Ten Tons Hellas" is showing the creation and history of this leading work of Munich landscape paintings of the 19th century. A model of the demolished Rottmann Room in the former Neue Pinakothek illustrates the way how the Rottmann gallery originally looked like.
