Fantastically plastic?
The Neue Sammlung – the State Museum of Applied Arts and Design | Design in the Pinakothek der Moderne – owns one of the largest and most important collections of industrial furniture design world-wide. The large number of objects reflects the technologies and materials used in the course of the 20th century, particularly the use of plastics. However these plastics, in contrast to most traditional materials, are subject to a dynamic ageing process and already show often irreversible signs of ageing, even after a short time. The Conservation Department of the Neue Sammlung uses two selected examples of furniture design to illustrate the possibilities and limits of restoration and conservation of objects made of plastic.
