Early Literature on Painting Techniques

28.08. - 01.09.06

The Knowledge Repository of the Technical University Munich

The Technical University Munich has been offering doctorate courses since 1900. In the last 106 years, more than 10.000 dissertations have been written in all sorts of specialist fields. Many of these were published in a very limited issue or even only as a single copy. The exhibition presents a selection of early works that deal with painting materials and binders, various aspects of wall painting and other areas of art technology. Most of this work was carried out in the period from 1920 to 1930 by the group headed by Prof. Dr. Alexander Eibner. This knowledge – much of which has still not been properly tapped – is stored in the library of the Technical University Munich. The exhibition of the Department of Restoration, Art Technology and Conservation Sciences at the Technical University Munich offers an overview on the networking between very different specialised scientific fields that aims at providing a pioneering method of preserving our cultural heritage.
