 A Gesamtkunstwerk in New Splendour

The extensive restoration and conservation measures undertaken at the Villa Stuck – one-of-a-kind artist’s villa from the late 19th century built by the painter, sculptor and architect Franz von Stuck – lasted from 2000 through 2005 and were part of a 13-year long reconstruction effort. Even in the preliminary phase, during the course of the research into those areas requiring restoration – from parquet floors to gold mosaics, from textiles through to the reconstruction of historic window latches – the latest restoration and conservation techniques were employed. In addition, some of the most important furnishings were recreated. The present exhibition in the historic rooms of the Villa Stuck presents some facets of this work, without which the soon-to-be 110-year-old Villa could not have re-opened in “new” splendour in March 2005.
