Why
WISSENSSPEICHER?

July 2006 to April 2007

Whether carefully kept in storage or archives, expertly cared for as a monument or presented in museums and exhibitions, cultural heritage from all over the world represents the memory of mankind. Without understanding and communication of their significance as well as without preservation of the material matter, our memory of the past will collapse. Conservation, restoration, and research are thus a matter for the general public. In Bavaria, this idea is written down as a binding commitment in its constitution.

Moreover, this idea prompted the Munich based Doerner Institut to develop the concept of a WISSENSSPEICHER (literally knowledge repository): Every cultural object is a WISSENSSPEICHER. Museums, collections and archives create big WISSENSSPEICHER. Conservators, restorers and academics from many disciplines care for these WISSENSSPEICHER.

To demonstrate their vivid commitment, more than 20 cultural institutions based in Munich will open exhibitions under the common title “WISSENSSPEICHER. Conservation, Restoration and Research in Munich”.
